Hada was in the Inipi Lodge (sweat lodge) completing an Hanblec’iya (Vision Quest) at Bear Butte, South Decota. David ask him to recount some of his significant experiences during Hanblec’ila.
Hada explained that three times the wind tryed to knock down his staff. (This was the first time Hada included his staff “Chartaka” in ceremony.) He said
the third time the force of the wind was so strong he bearly held onto it and its tip actually touched the ground.
David’s response was,
“The wind was testing you... It wanted to see if you could hold onto your staff.
“You must never drop your Staff... Did you let go of the staff?”
Hada responded, “No.”
“Good, you must never drop your staff!”
Taking on this staff is like living in a glass house. You have no more private life. Your life is now for the people.”
Then, knowing exactly what the staff represented, David looked over at Hada and said, in a strong way,
