Spear of Longinus

THE SPEAR
OF LONGINUS

According to tradition,
St. Longinus was the centurion
who pierced the side of Christ
to prove that Jesus was dead.
St. Longinus is said to have
been converted to Christianity
after noting the darkness
descending following Christ's
death, and because he was
healed of his poor eyesight by
Christ's blood flowing down his
spear. He is said to have given
up his military life and died a
martyr's death. Through his
acts at the Cross, St. Longinus
not only fulfilled Biblical
prophecy, but also gave the
world one of its most discussed
relics: The Holy Lance.

What the Bible says
of the piercing of Christ:

It was the Day of Preparation, and to avoid the bodies' remaining on the cross during the Sabbath -- since that Sabbath was a day of special solemnity -- the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away. Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with him and then of the other. When they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs, one of the soldiers, the centurion named Longinus, pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.

St. Longinus, by Gian Lorenzo Bernini

This action by Longinus fulfill the words of scripture:

“Not one bone of his will be broken”;

And again, in another place scripture says:

“They will look to the one whom they
have pierced”.

Trevor Ravenscroft is the most publicized researcher and chronologer of the Spear. In tracing the path of the Spear, Ravenscroft implies that it was instrumental in several significant battles between European Empires.

It was present when Saxon King Heinrich defeated the Magyars. Pope John XII used it to christen Heinrich's son Otto the Great as Holy Roman Emperor; Otto carried it into victory over the Mongolian Hordes in the Battle of Leck. Constantine claimed that he was guided by divine providence via the Spear in his victory at Milvian Bridge, which established Christianity as the Official Religion of the Holy Roman Empire. Constantine also used it while surveying the floor plans of his new city, Constantinople.

After bulldozing heathens for centuries in the name of "good", the spear fell into the hands of the "Ecclesiastical Bigot" Justinian, tainting the spear with a "dark evil quality". It was this dark quality and the supposed divine power of the spear that enthralled Adolph Hitler. The Nazis were fascinated with relics of all religions and were believed to be dabblers in the occult as well. Following the fall of the Third Reich, General Patton was terrified to find that they were in possession of the Spear. He was afraid that the U.S. would have to carry out its "Destiny" with atomic force.

Supposedly, the Spear of Destiny has existed on Earth since the beginning of recorded time, traveling from dynasty to dynasty. Another story holds that it was forged by the Ancient Hebrew Prophet, Phineas. The shaft is now gone, but the spearhead (held together by gold, silver and bronze thread and containing a nail from the crucifix) and its base (complete with embossed gold crosses) now rest in a fancy display case in the Hofsburg Treasure House in Germany. Where it wandered from Phineas (or "the beginning of time") to hands of King Heinrich in the 10th Century is less documented than its career in the European Theatre.
